UK consumers are adopting electric vehicles in record numbers. According to research from McKinsey & Company, the UK currently ranks fifth worldwide in electric vehicles (EV) with 108,205 sold in 2020 in the UK alone.
This represents a 180% year-on-year rise and takes EVs from 1.6% to 6.6% of the overall UK car market. Indeed, with the UK government bringing in legislation to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, the acceleration towards EVs is expected to increase as we approach this deadline.
Electrification is a growing trend for businesses too. The electric truck market is projected to grow at 39.7% a year from 2021 to 2030, with Europe the fastest growing region. And of course, as this market grows, so will demand for electric charging points at warehouses, both for trucks and employee or visitor vehicles. The installation of EV chargers is increasingly becoming essential to the efficient flow of goods and products.
At Logicor, we see this trend reflected in the business conversations we have with our customers, such as with Deponti, the high-quality aluminium garden verandas and related furniture manufacturer.
Deponti has recently moved into our Midland 42 warehouse, based at Midland Trading Estate in Rugby, UK, to help fulfil their customer orders in the area, and house products to showcase their stock to their customers.
As part of our refurbishment approach to the Midland 42 building (which you can see in this time-lapse), we proactively installed four EV charging points which will be used initially by Deponti’s employees.
Across the UK, we see other customers becoming increasingly keen to install their own EV charging facilities. As well as granting the necessary leases to help support this positive step, we work closely with the National Grid to ensure our customers have the required power supply to meet this new and growing need.
Shifting the logistics sector towards EVs matters. According to a property sector report, road transport is responsible for 20% of UK greenhouse gas emissions. Together with our customers, we are working to help change this. By providing EV infrastructure to enhance our existing UK facilities, and by including new charging features as standard when we develop build-to-suit UK warehouses, we can encourage and support this sustainable mode of transport.
